    1and1.co.uk upload issues

    Hi everyone,
Is anyone who uses 1and1.co.uk for their hosting experiencing issues uploading their sites at all?

I get intermittent errors when testing the network settings, most of which relate to the cgi-bin and permissions:

"You do not have write permissions to the cgi-bin directory "/cgi-bin/" or it does not exist."

But I do have the correct permissions on all relevant folders.

It's definitely a hosting issue as I have used a friends network settings on external space and my development site uploaded fine. I also tried to upload a standard default Sellerdeck site onto the space with the same network settings and get the same error:

"An error occurred while writing to "acatalog" on the web site. The problem is probably due to permissions problems, but could be due to low disk space. SellerDeck can not work with these settings. Press Cancel if you would like to manually examine the permissions and disk space on the web site. Press Retry if you would like SellerDeck to attempt to change the permissions on the directory for you."

When I 'Retry' it uploads a few hundred files then creeps back in with the same error.

If anyone is experiencing something similar then please drop me a line.
    Regards.

I seem to remember a post a few weeks ago about them upgrading their servers, think it was I&I

V8 Sites definitely no longer work properly under the upgraded 1&1 Linux servers. Long timeout when transferring to the PSP followed by an "internal server error" message. Demo site on http://drillpine.biz/v8lightbox and choose PayPal Website Payments.

      I've a friend with a live V8 site and we're moving it to Host-It.

I am having problems uploading a V16 site to a 1and1 shared server. The web settings have not changed and I get the error 'A connection with server could not be established' followed by 'An error occurred whilst writing to "acatalog" on the web site.

I am also getting problems accessing the site using an ftp client that has had no problems in the past so I agree this is just another 1and1 problem.

Interestingly changing the setting to use enhanced FTP improved the upload but still with errors. I seem to recall the 1and1 have changed the ftp to use secure transfer in which case if they had done it properly we should not be able to upload using standard ftp at all.
        EDIT
Switching my FTP client to use sftp sorted my client out so it looks like I will have to switch SellerDeck to use sftp or switch hosts

If you can upload to 1and1 using sftp it's also worth checking the connection to your PSP and/or paypal is still working as there have been problems reported there as well.

I solved the problem by using an FTP proxy.
I downloaded the Bitvise client which is free to use and then set up a login to my 1and1 server using the SFTP protocol on the login page of bitvise port is set to 22.

            Switch to the Services tab
            Enable FTP to SFTP Bridge.
Set the port number I had to change this as I was seeing error messages in the bottom of the window when clicking the apply link, so I eventually tried 81 which worked ok, I also clicked on change password and set that to the same password as my 1and1 ftp. Listen interface was set to 127.0.0.1.

Click Apply and leave the client logged on to the 1and1 server.

In SellerDeck open the Advanced Network Setup page and click the proxy button

Use the FTP settings not the HTTP settings, and click on Proxy box
            Set Server address to 127.0.0.1
            set port to 81
set username and password to the 1and1 ftp settings.
Click OK and the do a publish to web.

            Successful upload with no errors.

You need to start the BitVise client and login before using the Publish to web button in SellerDeck, if you forget you will get an erro box, just start the client and click retry in the box.

              Had all same problems

I get the same error messages randomly with my 1and1 sites. I cancel and start the upload again, and eventually it works. Pain.

I had purchased a new domain thru 1and1 a few months ago, but couldn't upload, problems with secure ftp, tried proxy but couldn't get to work, so transferred the domain to Host It and works find with no errors, just a nuisance waiting a month before could transfer domain.

At the moment I can still upload the other sites hosted by 1and1, though with error messages, but am dreading that at some point may get the same problems with sftp as had with the new site. Would transfer them all to Host It if could be done with no downtime.

I had to move a friends site to Host-It yesterday. We did it by using a fixed IP address at Host-It and simply changing a single DNS A record at 1&1. I've posted what I did on http://community.sellerdeck.com/showthread.php?t=56949

Note that the site was unusable on 1&1 so we weren't worried about downtime.

We can decide later on whether to transfer the domain to Host-It.

I generally find it's best to keep the domains with a third party such as 123-reg. Then it's an easy job to switch hosts in the case of problems / unresponsiveness / loss of goodwill, etc

                    1 & 1 issues-looking to change host

We are having the same problem. For last couple of months we are having a lot of problems uploading our version 14 and version 11 sites to 1& !. Keep getting same error message. Took us 2 hours to upload one site on friday and still ended up with partially uploaded site

Spoken to 1 & 1 and it is due to change to SFTP

We are looking to move hosting companies but we have multiple sites and so need a good package. Any recommendations ? Someone did mention 123 hosting. Does anyone have any experience using them

                      Hi there,
We use Teclan for our hosting our clients. Very good and very reasonable. They may be worth a call.
                      Regards.

                          Host-It

I am happy with Host-It package, especially done for Sellerdeck (they call it Actinic). They supplied file to import for web settings - great. Relevant site is quick to upload with no errors, in contrast to my other 7 sites hosted by 1and1.
