I currently have my products in subsections (1 sub section per product range). The main landing page presents the user with a 4 column sub section list showing all the subsections available.

I would like to keep this view showing all the sections (product ranges) that can be selected. I would like to add filters to this view so that the user can find the underlying products that match the filter.
Once the filter is selected the view can switch from subsections to products.
I can get the filters to work if the starting point shows products but not sections I am new to filtering and I am struggling to make this work.
I would be grateful if someone could let me know if/how to do this?
