Bing not indexing site

Hi all,
I have recently discovered that Bing has stopped indexing my site, seemingly since upgrading to 14.3. Google remains OK. It seems it doesn't go into the acatalog to index but stops at the home page. One example is the keywords "Graphic 45", we are one of the top UK suppliers there and feature on page 1 in Google, but nowhere to be seen in Bing. The only - very very few - pages I can see are indexed refer to the cgiI-bin and I have now asked it to ignore those. I have thousands of pages and only a handul are even looked at.

I have Sellerdeck cover and asked the Sellerdeck team for advice, they didn't want to help, saying I must have done something in the upgrade and that wasn't covered - but they could help at a price (although I am already paying for cover). I have looked in Bing Webmaster tools and just can't see what is causing it. There are no crawl errors and blocked pages, nor any messages to explain it. I would be so grateful if you could possibly take a look for me. This forum is lifeline for Sellerdeck users, thank you in advance.

I see what you mean. googles say they've indexed around 5,000 pages on your site. Bing 54.

Bing has it's own version of Webmaster Tools including a SEO Analyzer tool to help you optimise your site / follow best practices for Bing. I'd use that as a first step to see if you're doing anything they don't like.

Hi Mike, Thank you for reply. Nothing untowards there that would explain it. I'm stumped. It must just be Sellerdeck it objects to.

It is interested that I can see it isn't indexing anything in acatalog. Does anyone know why? Please see attached screenshot.

Iím not sure weíre in a position to say that yet. There are quite a few things that can cause problems and I havenít seen anything that says weíve exhausted all the possibilities yet. And of course my own site is in sellerdeck and fully indexed which suggests the problem isnít sellerdeck.

Bing tools has a Ďfetch as bing botí tool. Itís worth trying this on one of your pages in the acatalog folder that isnít indexed and seeing what happens just in case something is blocking the bing search bot from the acatalog folder.

The other thing I'd do is sort out your website's SSL. Google chrome doesn't like your https pages but your SSL certificate looks fine so I can only assume it's all the manual http links you have including your email sign up form that are causing the problems.

Submitting data to a non-https form means the data is not secure and is the kind of thing the search engines don't like.

Hi Mike, thanks so much for your replies. Shall try your suggestion and come back with the result.

Initially I only ever had SSL in checkout, but recently changed it to the whole site. I have manually updated any links I had hard-coded, just checked and the mailing list form seems OK?

As an aside I keep getting browser messages that not all items are secure, have checked everywhere but can't find it.

That seemed fine. Asked to fetch a page in the acatalog folder and it did so without problems:

Did you update the site after this? I'm still seeing around 50 http: links on your pages. Mostly navigation links but a couple of images, forms, etc.

e.g.

<img src="http://www.top50scrappers.co.uk/button.php?u=KarenMB" border="0" width="1" height="1" />
<form action='http://www.emailcontact.com/nl/nl-subscribe.php'...

Have to set up sellerdeck to apply SSL to the while site? I'm just wondering where all these http: navigation links are coming from.

Mike

EDIT: OK I see the image and form is now https: I guess I needed to refresh the page. The question on all the navigations links till aplies.

Yes I did just update. I caught the two you mention there.
I've set up Sellerdeck to apply to the whole site, yes. Did that a while ago.

Edited to say I have just updated the ones in the footer.

OK.

I've found where the remaining http: navigation links are coming from. You have a whole bunch in the footer area at the bottom of the page. This looks like a manual creation rather than part of the sellerdeck navigation. Possibly imported from a file if it isn't visible in your sellerdeck pages?

Mike

Well spotted. Possibly not live yet as I'm not seeing the change yet.

Edit2: There we go. Now live.

Edit3: You now have the lovely green 'Secure' SSL padlock in Google Chrome.

So, the next steps.

Having checked that Bing can see your pages and fixed the SSL side of things the one remaining thing I can think of to check is any redirects you might have in place (and maybe put some new ones in).

The key things here are:

1. Bing doesn't like 302 redirects.
2. Bing doesn't recognise Canonical tags.

so it's important to check your htaccess files doesn't do any 302 redirects and put in place something to permanently redirect all http: pages to https:

Thanks for your help Mike, will let you know how I get on.

Worryingly the pages Google indexed dropped hugely a few years ago from almost 30k to about 5-6k now, and I never found out why.

That will have been one of the Google updates. Google webmaster tools might have some clues for you but the usual suspects are a shortage of unique content and / or the pages being too many links away from the home page to have much in the way of link juice left.

Out of interest, I think I can only see around 2,300 pages linked to from your sitemap. Is that all your pages or do have more?

Mike

Yes there are lots more, but many were added as additional files so wont show up in the site map - they are linked from other pages through and do show up in search results. They were created away from Sellerdeck and are project ideas etc. Hardly any of the products have separate product pages, there are just too many.
