I'd like to know what my best sellers are, and feel there ought to be some report or other that would do that, but can't find one. "Sales analysis" looked promising, but (a) Sales by Product doesn't appear on the list and (b) the list contains no data anyway, just headings. Baffled, as usual.

The report includes a 'more options' button.
Click on this to see the different criteria you can add to the report, including sales by product.
If your report is empty, make sure you have set a date range that includes processed orders.
Also check that the criteria for 'include orders with' under more options, have been satisfied (try unticking all 3 boxes to see the difference)
When viewing the report, only the first summary page displays to start, but if you use the next page buttons, you will see the next page(s). -
