Customer registration

I was talking to an Actinic Business client of mine today and he was, quite rightly, horrified by the thought that a customer had to apply for an account then wait to be emailed before he could continue shopping. If somebody is trying to buy something late one evening, they would have to wait until the next day to make a purchase, thus the 'impulse' moment is lost.

I know the question about customers being able to sign themselves up with an account, and to continue shopping there and then, has been asked before. The last I heard was that it was being added to the wish list - is there any progress with this?
