    Advice On Website

    Dear all,

After posting for some help last week, it became clear that some people were 'having trouble' using our site.

    http://community.actinic.com/showthread.php?t=40219

I have not however received so much a glimpse of negative feedback from users, much the opposite.

Anyway, moving forward I would love your suggestions on improving the site.

Bearing in mind that the design of the site is to be as far from the standard actinic templates that turn out time and time again. Which I think we have managed to achieve.
(Credit due to Rickie Staple for the design)

The site's purpose of course is to sell product but it is not primarily a front for the business's sales. Nineplus.com is a site to educate people to the brand, the company and the ethos that Nineplus is.

I would love to hear your thoughts and advice on where I can move the site forward in the future.

Please if you are going to be critical, have a reason behind it. Some comments in the thread above just aren't helpful.

    Last of all...

    The website link...

    Thanks in advance

I can see loads wrong with the site but if you are going to tell me off before I even post I will keep my thoughts to myself.

      Tell you off?

I was talking more about the negative criticism that I received when asking for help.

Everyone's thoughts are welcome, as long as they are backed by a reason.

If its crap, why is it crap, what would you do to make it 'less crap'

I'm here for help, not to know about all my wrongs. Its not very encouraging when you are part of a forum of people all doing the same thing, and no one can say anything good about anyone else's work.

I find that the text is very difficult to read, both in font size and contrast.

The layout breaks in IE6 - see attached.

          OK.

The fonts are too small. I wear reading glasses but still have trouble making out what the words say.

I can't see immediately what you sell. Apparently you sell longboards, surf boards, and wetsuits. I see no evidence of this anywhere on the home page. Where are the relevant images?

A picture of a slouching beardie is a right turn off. And the sulky girl in the beret does nothing for me either.

The fact that you have a whacking great typo* bang slap in the middle of the page smacks of amateurism.

I've never heard of your brand before. I've never seen it advertised. The fact that your "family has grown" therefore means nothing. I have heard of FatFace and I have heard of RipCurl, Billabong and Gul.

So why should I buy anything from your website when I can get recognisable brand names from a gazillion other outlets?

*and no, I'm not going to tell you what it is.

          --edit--

Perhaps it's not a typo. Perhaps it a common word which I've never heard of before that's used only in the clothing industry. Whatever, google doesn't recognise it.

Hi I am not a web designer but if you want my opinion I think the site is cleverly designed but I find it hard on my eyes the gray text and the size is to small have to strain to see it.

              My constructive advice:

Your font size is 11px this needs to be at least 12

Menu font size is way to small - I normally use 14 - it needs to be clear that its a menu

The colour of the font is much to light try something close to black

The font Times New Roman is sometimes a bad choice for websites

It needs to be more 'confident' and bold......Tell the customer where to click almost!

You have errors such as this the wrongly coded pound sign :Free Nineplus Book With every Nineplus purchase when you spend over ÂŁ50.00

Because the of the size and colour of the text if I click on a section, It takes me 2 minutes to see what to click next...

hope that helps, good luck m8

ps.all the photos of the people look really glum

Ever wondered why - the are some basic principles of ecommerce website design that help shoppers and sell products. When you "dare to be different" you ignore these and so loose usability and sales - this has happened to your site as other have illustrated.

BUT as long as you and your client are happy with it then ITS A FANTASTIC SITE

                    Dan,

IMO You have way too much white space on the upper part of the page. Perhaps you should make the logo bigger and turn it into a link back to the home page.

This text "The Nineplus Group. The Family Has Grown..." means nothing to me, so I assumed it was going to be a link to tell me how the family had grown.

The nav bar at the top isn't obvious enough, I originally thought it was a breadcrumb trail.

Your "information" link, should be titled "Contact Details" IMO

The site seems to focused more about the ethos of your company rather than selling, which makes it difficult to navigate.

The grey text is not very easy to read.

                    I can't search your site

Putting lots of keywords into your page titles is not going to do any good from an SEO perspective. You need to keep them short and concise and different. Every page is the same.

You don't have any keywords or descriptions, from what I can see.

Sorry have to agree with the majority, the text is incredibly hard to read and I have fantastic vision but struggle to read it, also the link for the bigger image should really be clearly defined like Bigger Image

Finally not trying to offend if its you, but the male model shouts 'homeless vagrant' to me. Personally I want to either see the products on their own or modelled by someone that says I could look that good if I brought that item and in this case I am not inspired

When you have a web designer whose homepage has a 'badge' on it which states 'portfolio under construction please check back soon' it doesn't inspire confidence in them IMHO.

It's also full of grey 'tiny font' Times New Roman as well.
