The approach seems to be to cover the whole of the data surface with a sheet of read/write heads so you could almost read the whole disk in an instant.
Seems to have away to go though. The first generation only allows 64 of the millions of read/write heads to be active at a time.
Anything that would speed up hard disk access has to be a good idea though. Processors are very powerful, ram is very cheap, Hard disk drives have got massive but aren't really improving that fast in the speed stakes.
