Is there a demo site published anywhere with the new filtering working as I can't get this to work in the beta installation.

A good example to view Filtering is the Wedding Jewellery section in the default database. In the preview, you can see the preset filtering criteria. You could upload this site to a test server and have a play with the different settings pertaining to Filtering.
The Wedding Jewellery section is left as a blank section per se, which is populated based on the filtering option selected on the left.
