I found that the Departments subsections filter in the generated Filter By menu in the left sidebar wasn't showing any subsections at all. Normally this would be switched on here:
What wasn't obvious to me was that this setting, if it's visible, must also be ticked to show filtered subsections:
I'd imported my catalogue with this set to 0 (unticked) as I hadn't wanted it in the previous installation for each section. This option only shows in Section : General if you have this setting ticked:
Moral of the story for me is: don't import any fields that may affect functionality of a fresh SellerDeck 2013 installation...
- Settings : Search And Filtering Settings : Filtering : (tick) Allow Searching [sic] By Subsections : (depth 1 or more)
- Section : Filtering : (tick) Enable Filtering and Sorting
