Fragments on top of two column product page

Hi all, I'm building a new responsive site with v2014. Within each Section I would like to have a Fragment (at the top) with Products listed below in two columns. How can I make the Fragment span the two columns? I've found suggestions on this topic for earlier SD versions but not v2014 and they don't appear to work (unless I'm doing something wrong). Putting a similar Fragment at the bottom of the Product list would be a nice feature too if possible. Your help is much appreciated.

Many thanks Louise, you are a star! Both solutions work but I've gone with solution 2 to overcome the empty border problem you mentioned - I'm on 14.0.2 and the bug(?) appears to still be there.
