Two different Thumbnails dependent on section?

Hi

I have a store that has some normal sections and some filtered sections, what I would like to do is add a variable called thumbnail2 and then use a block if or something to make the filtered page show a different thumbnail when it selects the product to go in the filtered section, is this possible? Has anyone done anything like this? I sort of have an idea how it should work, just wondering if it can! Any help would be much appreciated,
