Curious character instead of £

We've just upgraded a site to V9 which is linked to sage, and noticed that some very odd characters are being imported as part of the product description instead of the £ sign. Here is an example:

We seem to be getting a ú displayed, and in the source code it is generating a &#250 ; . Has anyone encountered this before?
