    Where do we go next?

We have had our site http://www.scottishgifts4u.co.uk/ since 2003. It has been mainly a hobby, giving us a bit of an interest outside of our normal jobs.

Sales have always been pretty slow, one or two a week except at xmas when it gets a bit busier, relying purely on search engines for visits.

We had the site professionally overhauled which we were really pleased with but sales haven't increased very much.Google analytics show between 5 and 20 hits/day.

Where do we go from here to increase visits and sales? Would you recommend advertising pay per click or in magazines/newspapers (bearing in mind most of our sales are in Scotland) or is there any other way?

Set some time aside and learn Google Adwords - this is a good start point and quite cheap too esp in comparison to magazine advertising etc.

Have you tried Google Products (Froogle) that often helps both sales and your rankings. Have you submitted the site to any search engines/ directories, are you mentioned on your suppliers web sites all this gets your site noticed. Magazine advertising is going to be a large expense in comparison with your sales so unless you have money to invest you need to consider all the other options.

Social media is a big buzzword in internet marketing these days too. Blogging, Facebook, Twitter have all got their supporters.

Never really got the hang of it myself.

We started PPC with adwords at about £0.10-£0.14 per click and a maximum of about £2.00 per day when we started and soon found a good increase in sales, now spend over £3500 per month on adwords and on average each sales costs us under 3% of the sale price

To start with really look at your keywords and pick the very niche ones not "Scottish Gifts", but something like "Tartan Key rings" the first will cost a lot and get many hits but few sales whilst the second may be cheaper and have much better sales. Just try and think like a buyer and what they will type in Google
