Having spent ages in dialogues with both web hosting and SellerDeck support people I finally found a simple fix - remove any non-alphanumeric characters from the SMTP password.
Security is becoming tighter these days and more complex passwords are required so it's not surprising that providers are encouraging the use of non-alphanumeric characters. I've not come across any other software that doesn't like them but they seem to offend SellerDeck's mail script!
This might not work for everyone but it's something else to check when troubleshooting.
