I upgraded a few months back for peace of mind on the security front.
Everything ran smoothly from day one and it even recognised that I use AVG and Zonealarm and didn't mess about with my firewall and anti-virus settings.
Definitely recommended.

XP-SP2 will become mandatory very soon. You won't be able to load future security and other patches without it. And you really need all these patches since Windows is such a leaky system.Norman - www.drillpine.biz

Sp2
Microsoft have a whole support website dealing with XP SP2 - this has some very useful tips on how to avoid problems
I would recommend that you have your anti-virus and firewall programs upto date before you do the upgrade and that you take both a full backup of the system and registry and that you set a system snapshot/rollback point as well.
This will give you some rollback options but you shouldnt have major problems - you may get a wizard asking if you want the MS firewall and you may need to "tame" your internet explorer options afterwards
But the support website has lots of info if you find you need it

Hopes this helps
