Product pages are a nightmare, I have not really looked hard at them
Im just working on the brochure pages, but the work involved for a slight gain may not be worth it and on balance compacted code may be the easy option if the majority of pages are products. Some of my sites have very few product pages and lots of brochure pages so it may be site dependent.
