I was in a leading high street bank this morning and the teller had a mobile phone beside her on the counter, which I thought was odd. What I didn't expect was it to ring and then for her to answer it without a moment of embarrassment or regard for me the customer! I was furious. I hear the conversation very clearly and she was organizing with her husband when the taxi should pick them up for their meal tonight!!

I made it clear i was cross and she made it clear she was not in the slightest bit bothered.

I really think this issue just highlights the type of employee you have.
A good employee won't take the micky, where a bad one will.
The phone is merely the tool to reveal his behaviour.

Have clear, fair rules, with a clear disciplinary route should they break them.
Make it part of new employees contracts
and play by the rules yourself.

Reminds me of the Nationwide ad running at the moment when the staff can't be bothered.

A serious complaint to the branch manager and the head office is called for enquiring what their policy is for mobile phone use for counter staff.

For a bank I would think it a serious issue given the security implications and fraud that could be gained through indiscriminate and unregulated use!
