    Laptop Looping On Start-Up

    Hi,

Has anybody got any ideas to help me retreive files from a friends Laptop which appears to be having problems starting Windows XP ?

When it attempts to boot it comes up with Windows XP loading screen but goes back to try and re-boot. At this stage it comes up with the usual dos type screen saying windows did not start correctly and gives the options of booting in safe mode, booting from a network, booting from last working configuration etc etc

It does not matter which option you select it still will not boot. There is no floppy disk in the machine so can not create a dos boot disk on another machine and use this.

They tried to call the help desk who suggested they recover the system from the cd which came with the machine. Problem is this will put the machine back to the state it was when shipped from the factory and we NEED to retrieve a few word documents !

    Any ideas would be welcome.

If you have a small (2.5") portable external drive you could remove the drive from the laptop, place it in the external drive and access it via another machine's USB port.

If you have time you could in fact go and buy a casing for an external 2.5 " HDD - they only cost about £15.

      slax

download the live cd slax, and boot from it. this will let you access your drive, and email/ftp these files to yourself. failing this, it supports external usb thumb and hard drives.

      http://merlin.fit.vutbr.cz/mirrors/s...slax-5.1.6.iso

      direct link to iso.

an iso is an image of the cd. use a program like nero to burn it.

      you'll find more info here:
