Stupid question but how do I stop outlook opening up a new window when it gets new mail. I am happily typing a email to someone and then this dam new window opens up, and as I am such a crap typist I have to keep looking at the keyboard and then when i notice the new window, I have to retype it all again

Never seen this in Outlook.
Could it be you are pressing ctrl-O to open the window when typing? Are you using the preview pane to display the email? -
I think you are referring to the little blue box that pops up to the right side of the screen. To disable this:
Tools|Options - Email Options - Advanced Email Options - see settings for When New Items Arrive - Display a New Desktop Alert.
As usual MS have put this close to the centre of the earth.Comment

Yes I am using the preview window
No not the new mail message pop up, the pop up is the opened window with the new message opened in it
