    Designer?

The new Actinic Designer, is this the sequel to Actinic Developer?

    nope.

Developer is upgraded to Business Multi Site and designer allows you to deploy client sites (the client then needs to purchase the appropriate version)

      Designer?

      Gotcha.
So to put it simply. I would use Designer to Design and launch a website for a client, then the client buys Actiinic software to run it themselves?

      How does Business Multi-Site differ?

Sorry to be dumb but I want to make sure I buy the right thing?

Yes and No .... Developer was aimed at erm .. developers to set up sites for clients and then hand them over ... in reality Developer was used as a multi site option by store owners to handle ecommerce over several sites. Most developers tended to use the clients license to create sites and then handed the site over.

If you are creating for clients then Designer is fine - if you need to handle orders from several sites yourself you will require multi site as explained by Darren

if you buy designer, your client can then buy catalog client

or you can simply buy full version of catalog to both design in andhandover to your client.

if your client had catalog client they will not be ble to make any design changes.

both catalog and catalg client allows the client to process orders and manage products.

Same applies to business and business client

Clients cannot buy Catalog Client directly from Actinic it has to be through a designer.

Do you think marketing could have made the new range any more complicated?

                Software choice

                That made me chuckle Jont!
So I think I'm clear now. I would be managing several of my own stores, designing them and taking order so I guess Business Multi Site is the one for me.
                Thanks everyone.

the designers job is to design the interface, create new layouts etc, hence the designer type of product, in theory, you then hand over the design (deploy partial site design) to the client (with either catalog or business client), install the "new look" and let them get on with running the day to day business of thier web site.
You naturally give them instructions as to how to use your new layouts to get the required design.
With client licences, they can choose your layouts (and those supplied by actinic) but cannot create new layout code themselves (the designers job)

With the full editions, they get the abilty to affect the design and do the day to day running.
the multi-site licence is allowing you to create designs, and day to day running on MANY sites from the same machine.

In theory, nothing prevents you from having ONE designer licence and multiple client licences to achieve the same results - horses for courses, and which one is the cheaper TOTAL solution (for multiple sites).

I believe that the MULTI-SITE licence is UNLIMITED sites. !

I MUST say, though, the deploying of sites by the designer has NOT yet been fully implemented and I'm running into issues already (on two different client sites) - it makes me seriously consider which is the BEST route to take and the best way forward.
