    DDOS Attack affecting Pinbrook

Anyone else suffering a slow site through Pinbrook?

Apparently there has been a DDOS attack hitting the system provider they use since Saturday and is still persisting.

They're keeping things running but my site is running extremely slowly.

    Is this common?

    Yes!!!!

We are also having huge problems. Our site is so slow it is impossible to use. Orders are down 75% on last week.

Pinbrook are working on it but it certainly has not been resolved yet.

I don't think it is effecting all sites, mine seem fine, in fact we had one of our busiest days ever today.

Jo isn't available ATM (she might be later on today though) but I have just had a chat with the pinbrook support guys and they have said this :

"We are still dealing with a distributed denial of service attack unfortunately. Although we are keeping the worst of the traffic at bay we are still seeing approximately 175'000 requests per second from multiple locations aimed at the network. We hope to have this sorted by the end of today."

So it should be fine later if all goes well.

As to whether this is usual, I would say definately not, this is the first time this has happened as far as I am aware, certainly the first in the 2 years I have been with Pinbrook.

tbh I hadn't noticed (but I haven't been "on site" today!)
Now I've checked though, the site IS painfully slow...luckily my customers must be a patient lot coz I've still had a busy day!

Good time of year for babies I think, lets hope they are not shopping while in labour, still so long as they haven't reached the pant, pant, blow stage all should be fine ;-)

(I've just had some very amusing/scarey thoughts about the contents of your how did you find our site field if they were :-))

I was really worried about this at first. I'm still developing my site and thought that my page load times were down to the extra graphics and javascript.

I'd read a really old post that mentioned DOS attack experienced by Pinbrook before and wondered whether the server provider they used had a client who were being targeted.

Bit late for my, on the most part, by that point!

Well currently I considerately provide a dropdown box to select from so it makes things simpler! In time (when we're more widely and locally advertised) I'll be leaving it as a "fill in" field, I think so I'll report back!

My site is up and down like a yo-yo. Can't use Actinic even to update as it times out.

And yes orders are not what they should be.

I have noticed that since the DOS attack has prevented my site from being accessed Google has decided I meant something else!
What it does bring up is all the threads that I have written to this forum. I rather these weren't indexed as it would apply to most people posting issues that we'd not like the general public to read. That could just sign up and follow the threads!

Has this ever been addressed before?

Duncan - this has been brought up before.
Its for that very reason I removed my home page tag sign off and surname from my profile.
Customers may innocently search for your shop and find threads on google pertaining to all sorts of posts on here!

This is a very good point Duncan and something I've though of before as well. I usually try to have this in mind when I post. This is one of the advanages of the designer closed forum - I don't think this get listed in Google - be interesting to check this out for sure though - at least casual readers don't have access to the posts.

Does anyone have any updates on the situation from Pinbrook?

My website went offline last night completely and still isn't back up and running. Of course, you only ever get the support desk at Pinbrook who don't know anything, can't tell you anything, and certainly can't put you on hold.

Last time my site went down it was back up within about 1 hour which was great - (well acceptable considering). It's been off for about 8 hours now.

Anyone have any idea how this can be resolved? How long it will take? Or whether it's good advice just to start the process of moving host?

I'm sure Jo is working extremely hard to resolve these problems, but due to the nature of these problems it is very tough to diagnose and fix the issues.

Jo Moorcroft from Pinbrook is a regular contributor to this forum, and I'm sure when she gets 2 seconds, she will post here with an update. Until then, I would ask that any questions or issues of this nature should be asked directly to the company.

A DOS attack can happen to anyone Gill. And like you I'm not available and it's hurting.

Any host is at some point going to be a target. The crucial decision about moving is finding out who is best able to deal with it and how quickly it can be negated and so become zero impact for the site.

I'd hold fire on moving and see what transpires and what lessons have been learnt by Pinbrook to ensure a more robust system that can defend itself against such an attack should it happen again.

It is now a pertinent question to ask any host when considering a move.

and lets face it, even "big" companies such as the big PSPs get hit by DOS attacks regularly enough! (no offence Jo, not meaning to imply you're small fry )
