Hovering over the clock to show the date not good enough for you? See http://www.ppcsg.com/lofiversion/index.php/t50233.html

You get that if you expand the taskbar to 2 lines.

Just thought that in amongst all the visually unused stuff on my screen I'd throw in something that is useful.

Handy if you happen to be writing* and need the date.

My next requirement is an online thingy to check that the alignment (height setting and width setting) is set correctly on a monitor.

I kid you not, and I am aware there is a gadget you can buy but failing that I'll have to make a 500 x 500 box in Paint Shop and manually measure the sides with a ruler!

With the splurge of widescreen jobbies surely this is a common requirement now?

The Firefox Web Developer Toolbar Add-in will do that as well as tons more.

Believe it or not, even IE7 can check (and change on the fly) screen resolutions now, IF you have the Developer Toolbar installed.

If at the design stage I use these http://www.webmasterfree.com/calipers.html which are free and vital for pixel perfect layouts

Putting my reputation at risk once more...

...if a screen view was set too high (vertically stretched), would a ruler or calipers not be stretched also?

*quivers, ready to hang head in shame*

Screen calipers measure the pixel distance so they work in respect of the resolution and view as set .. so 100px remains 100px regardless of the monitor / resolution .. if you stick your 6" plastic rule from your maths set up against the monitor you are asking for trouble

I only use pointy compass with the CRT and its glass monitor ... the LCD goes all psychaedelic when touched so best not to use.

I will see if I have the original files and whack them over to you.
