    Microsoft Word

I've an old laptop that we want to start using for simple documents in Word but it's not installed.

I've hunted but cannot see that Word is available to purchase or download anywhere without buying an Office package.

Anyone know if word is available as a separate software purchase, any where?

    TIA

Word comes in with Microsoft Works which I think you can get for about £49

I thought that Microsoft Works gave me a word processor but not Word in particular?

Works gives you a word processor but not Word and I think it's only compatible as rtf. I have used a trial of the 'Tesco' (Ability) office and it's compatibility is quite good - not perfect mind - but a good low priced alternative.
You can see the details and download a trial here:

tesco's is just a branded version of open office - available free as a standard download.
one thing to watch out for, the open office will allow you to open and save *.doc files but its default is something like *.oft (not exactly sure) - you will need to change the option to saye as a *.doc file as the default file format otherwise people will not be able to open your documents - found out when I sent someone an "open office document" in the wrong format - by which time, I had loads of docs on my hardisk in the wrong format and I had to go back and save them all again.
