Take a look at rackspace they claim to do managed dedicated servers.

Apparantly they will look after the server for you, patches etc..

That is something you have to use your own experience and judgement for, we have just changed from a 1and1 Germany based dedicated server to a UK Datacenter based (Reading) dedicated server from Dedipower. It's their own Datacenter with very good backbone connections and you may find some of the people you're already looking at, house their dedicated and virtual dedicated servers in the Dedipower datacentre.

You pay your money and make your choice, there's always a risk element.

I looked at rackspace when I wanted a dedicated server a couple of years ago but discounted them because even though I said it was urgent, it took them 2 months to get back to me.

You can get fully managed dedicated servers at very reasonable rates, you need to look at what you want to achieve, do you want complete control over your server, so that you can at will for example add extra programs (asp for a windows server for example), or do you just want to have hosting that is indepedant of other sites and runs faster with a high bandwidth allowance.

We have a fully managed server, it's no different from a management point of view than shared hosting was, but it's much much faster and we have a huge bandwidth allowance (and it costs me a fraction of what rackspace quoted for the same service level, when they did eventually bother to get back to me).

If I may re-open this (albeit a bit after time )

It is almost time for us to get 1 of our clients to 'open their IT wallets' (site size, performance, future growth etc) and I can state that dedicated is the way, BUT we have got a clear path of whom will be getting our much fought after pennies....

Our Largest client and potentially biggest growth site => we are using Techno in the early summer (sorry Ian, not rang recently but you hopefully remember what we want with a 40% discount LOL ) Reason: Used them for years and had nothing but the best service levels on all fronts and they understand our business constraints perfectly...
