    TIP of the DAY

New thread with a new tip added each day, maybe on actinic, maybe on something else, who knows, we shall see.

    Monday 16th April - Peeling a Banana

When opening a banana, don't attack the obvious end (the stalk), it is far easier to peel a banana from the opposite end.

Tuesday 17th April - Snapshot Advice

Before you do any work on your actinic site, take a snapshot, after you have done the work, also take a snapshot.

Create an archive of snapshots, keeping the last 4 or 5 as reference.
Date the snapshot i.e. Snapshot170407.acd, if you do more than one on any day, then name them Snapshot170407(2).acd, Snapshot170407(3).acd etc.

NEVER overwrite an existing snapshot, if it messes up during the process, you are left with nothing.

Make sure at least once a week that you archive a snapshot to an external drive or a different computer and make sure that is not stored in same place as the main version (in event of a fire/burglary, you don't want a single point of failure for your business).

Fail to adopt some common sense protection of your investment and i will see you in the forum in the future asking how to get your site back off the server.

Make a note of all your passwords and ftp details and keep them in a seperate place from your office or home (i.e. where your computer is kept) along with your other backups

suggestion to a change of the snapshot name:
                Snapshot070417-1745.acd
                in the format yymmdd-hhmm
doing it this way will allow you to sort on names and it will automatically sort it into date order, if you use the way Lee suggests, then all files on the "17th" of the month will be grouped together rather than the year, then the month, then the day - the addition of the hours and minutes allows you to make as many snapshots as you like.

How many snapshots are you suggesting to keep? A week year old snapshot is useless if you have one since?

Are you suggesting keeping a yearly library? Apart from taking up a load of wasted space, what on earth would that offer you?

not necessarily, if the most recent one contains errors and you need to go back further.

Hence my initial tip states to keep 4 or 5 for reference?

You'd have to have one unbelievably good indexing system to know what the hell was on one snapshot which wasn't on another. I'd suggest redoing a certain feature would be far quicker than trawling through numerous snapshots, however horses for courses.

A key snapshot marking a specific feature is a good idea, but non descript daily ones would be the most useless waste of space i could ever personally think of.

I use a hidden fragment to store version/change infomation and I update it before I create a snapshot. That way I have a pretty good idea of what was done each time.

i don't necessarily keep all snapshots, but i do keep loads of them. I spring clean when i need the diskspace.
