    Braodband DNS problem

    I've been having an odd problem with my broadband connection (I'm with TalkTalk). It has been working ok for many months, but recently, the router is able to make the connection, but the browser can't serve pages - it gives the dnserror page which means it is unable to resolve page names. If I put in a known IP address, it can return the page.

    Now here's the wierd bit: if I connect my dial-up connection (Freeserve) and then disconnect it, the broadband sorts itself out and is fine until I turn the router off at night.

    I've been in contact with the help desk and I have had direct email correspondance with someone from second-line support, but I think I have reached the depths of his knowledge and he's stopped replying to my emails.

    It could be your firewall. If you're using Zonealarm, make sure that your router and dns server are both in the trusted zone.

      or this:

      try to find your isp's dns servers, set them manually in your tcp/ip settings.

      dont let them be fetched automatically, specify them.

          start, run, ipconfig flushdns

          will clear DNs from your PC, you could run it and see if it has any effect in times of trouble

            Thats what the support guy suggested and had no effect. I've tried using ipconfig/all and that reports the DNS server
            as being my router (which makes sense). Isn't a flushdns simply flushing that? (voice of some ignorance here)

              Yes all it does is clear your PC. I wasn't offering this as a solution, but just as a way to clear the PC rather than having to use dial up.

                62.24.128.17
                62.24.128.18

                  ditto Gabe above... the issue is partially that you're using the router as your local DNS server. If the router goes screwy, byebye DNS. If you manually specify DNS servers you remove the router from the equation.

                  Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Local Area Connection (right click > properties) > internet protocol (TCP/IP) > Properties > Use the following DNS server addresses: then specify the DNS Servers as above, or alternately, use mine at 69.93.114.226 & 69.93.114.227

                  Regardless of what the router is doing, as long as the PC has IP Connectivity with the outside world (which you confirm as having in your original post) you should then have no probs with DNS servers... and if you continue having issues, then it's something else.
