can you auto divert to differenet webspace?

hi just a question to all you host people out there

if i had 2 hosting accounts with different firms, would it be possible to jump from one to the other if the 1st was down or unreachable?

so eg: www.myurl.co.uk ......... site down
bounce
(2nd host) tada site is infront of the customer


can it be done or am i in dream land?

It's been a while since I've known about this this stuff, but I would probably say no. DNS changes usually take too long to propogate, so the way this is normally done is to have the website on two servers with the same host. Then a router/switch can be be configured to ping the 'live' server and if it ever falls over switch all traffic to the backup one. (this is on the basis that the most likely failure is the server, if it's DOS attacks that are a problem then a different solution is needed).

There is then all kinds of problems with ensuring consistency across servers for things like order numbers, etc so it isn't an easy thing to do.

I can't see that working, nor really being needed. I monitor server uptime with hosttracker which is useful.

Why might you want to do that, have you had some bad experience with your host?

Maybe a better solution is to look for a host that has 100% SLA - they cost more , but if you were considering paying the extra cost of 2 hosts, then it might be worth some research

i have 2 hosts just now 1 is fine 1 has its moments so just looking into using both for the one site

im currently reading through the recommended host topics on this very forum and looking at your goodselves of course
