    The New v8 Sub-Forums

Here is a poll - thoughts and opinions welcome.

Just one note, the one thing that won't be happening is that I won't split the whole v8 forum into sub-forums and then close the main v8 forum for new posts. That is just too massive a job.

A total waste of time, and ugly to boot, get rid of them immediately!

A good concept, that needs to look a bit better.

    Fine as they are.

I went for the middle one.

PS I'd suggest ALL new v8 posts go into the v8 forum, and only those that are worthy of keeping for reference get shifted into the sub forums. That way the subforums stay `clean` and a decent browse when looking into said subject for help.

PPS And, as suggested, it'd be handy if they can be collapsed out of the way if/when not needed.

Im the non techie... so why would it be a lot of work if it was done this way:

Close the main forum to new posts, then create a number of new sub forums where in the new posts can be posted - leaving all the old posts in the main forum - which as time goes on and we move into v9 etc will lose its importance. The question then being how many and what kind of sub forums to have.

[EDIT] I went for the middle option also [/EDIT]

          Chris,

could you not rename the v8 forum to Misc/General and then create a new v8 cat forum. Then move the Misc/General (old v8) to become a sub alongside all the rest. You wouldnt need to move any threads and the general will be on the same level as the other subs so people will be more inclined to choose the correct one.

That's how I thought it would be done! Then the mods can move any threads they think should be in another forum as they come across them in helping people.

              DavID said the "m" word!

Seriously, I do think that new posts should HAVE to go into a sub forum and the main forum (V8, this is) ought to be either re-used or read only while it is sorted through (although I don't believe for one minute that anyone is actually going to sort through it...sorry Chris, no offence!)

There does seem to be a split of opinion though.
The poll might give a false impression though because, while plenty of people agree that the current format isn't completely "right", there seems to be a general disagreement about what is right!

there is a distinct lack of options in this poll:

                - i dont care as long as my noob questions get answered

                is a missing option.

Even if I am a bit of a dork I usually have a browse of most of the new stuff, certainly wont be scanning five v8 forums though.

One picks up on issues people are having on say, certain psp's (eg the Paypal escapade), non-friendly Actinic host's etc and other useful info.

but if you use the "New posts" facility then it displays them all on one screen so you don't have to visit any forums specifically.
I don't see the problem with that

Maybeeees but its sometimes handy to keep an eye on current issues, not just the new threads.

Just wondering if the `old way` was better after all.

Surely it just means it's even easier to ignore what you can't help with. For instance, I haven't used a PSP in my life, wouldn't know my arse from my elbow when it came to setting them up in Actinic!

True, but I think its handy to keep an eye on such subjects thats all.

Yep close the original v8 forum to new threads, over time go in an delete the dross so it becomes a decent reference point.

All new posts to sub forums, at least them to can pick and choose the topics you want to monitor.

I agree with David, for him the PSP forum is something to pass over, but its there as useful reference point if he needs it. There will be others with similar needs.

I tend to err towards simple shipping, but if i ever need a more complex set up i know where to look now... the shipping sub forum

Yep just the way its setup for me that is wrong, even more so with those 4 straggling posts at the top - seriously put them to bed, thats the biggest mess ive ever seen in a forum.

Rename the v8 forum into miscellaneous and move it to be a sub-forum, then do the v8 header as previously explained which is just a title. This way the forum starts to take on the structure of the future and you don't have to spend the 1.5 days it would take to move posts into the correct forums.

As you see things in the misc forum, move them and start to build the sub forums up.

Although, one good solid day on this forum would have it 90% of the way there, if actinic cannot provide that kind of input, then the whole exercise is a waste of time IMO - yet another half hearted attempt. I split a 95 page forum into 5 sub-forums in a day, so it really isnt that much work.

If actinic want to play the control freak on the forum, then put a bloody full time mod in place, even more so, now your support are sending people here to sort their problems - these people being sent here either deserve better support on the phone or a professional organised resource in the forum.

How much talk can continue on the same subject, any non-actinic person would have this finished and put to bed by now, i've launched 2 brand new websites since this debacle started - sheesh!
