We looked into this last year for the shop / insurance and concluded bloody expensive. We went down the route of hi-res web cams on the network which have remote access and motion recording onto a hard drive. As it is network based anyone can view the cameras at any PC. We run 4 cameras but you should be able to get the software to handle more - loads of open source stuff out there.

Ours came in at under £250.00 for the 4 cams and the storage space so you can scale it accordingly so Lee's figure is about right.

Laptop did not make it to Wales

i personally run an old amd pc with a dvr card and cameras hooked up

works fine just add as many hard drives as you think you need
Remembering the road to Actinic enlightenment is a long and sometimes painful one.

Last time i looked at the pc option, about 4 years ago, it was not that clever, but i think i will be revisiting this again, got a few old pc's here, can probably know something up. Of course im not paying the bill, so probably not as concerned as i should be

              cheers

If you're throwing money around you could look at one of these bad boys:

                Firmware written by yours trully

                  Thanks Alan

I dread to think how much this would cost, looking more at these sort of things

Actinic site, not sure on the font though, thought it might be someone here

                  Cheers

Our baby isn't too expensive, but it is designed to be integrated into a complete security and access control suite. We intergate with a lot of third party DVRs as well. What you're looking at is probably about right. With 16 cameras at MPEG4, 80Gb is going to fill up very quickly (depending on frame rate and resolution). Are you going to try and archive the drive? (we use FTP to a storage server - but its takes all night).

I did not realise it was one of yours Alan, oppologies, just looked a little to pro for me

I would go for a DVR with a 500gb drive, give me a couple of weeks with medium quality.

I just want to rip out the 4 way split boxes and stick a dvr in with dual moniter outputs - this seems to be the sticking point, finding one that will put 4 cameras on each output with various functions such as split screen, cycle, PIP, 3&1 e.t.c

This my 'work' hat. I spent the last two years on the firmware development of that beast. Yes, it is at the professional end of the market.

All the low-end DVR's tend to be low on flexibility.

Alan i will have to take a look at some of this stuff, my nephew installs networks and CCTV systems, do you know who seels it or do you guys sell direct.

As for the DVR's seems no happy medium, it then jumps to 3 outputs? wich in my book does not work with 8 / 10 / 16 cameras ? dont figure

Im sure i will keep looking and amybe comeup with something, never rudh into anything me, all takes time.

                          Cheers

You need to talk to Group 4 Technology - but still probably too high-end. They do produce a video only solution - very flexible control and display, but probably quite pricey. They tend to sell into installations with large numbers of cameras.
