    Webspace/Hosting - No folders?

I recently purchased a new domain name (www.churchroadstores.co.uk) and hosting through 123-reg but I can't see anything I upload, just the holding page. I e-mailed tech support last week and waited in queue on phone for 25 minutes (at 40p per minute) before finally giving up, the problem has not been resolved and I have had no response from TS - probably why the package was so cheap!

So here's the problem - when I ftp into the domain I can connect without a problem to the top level folder "/", but there is nothing in it. I'm no expert but I would have expected to see www/public_html/cgi folders .htaccess etc. So I tried uploading a test page index.htm but still just get the holding page, tried again after creating a public_html folder and copying files across but still nothing. I am assuming that the webspace has not been configured properly but i'm fed up of waiting for tech support.

Can any of you techie guys help?
    Am I missing something?
Is it possible to create neccesary files/folders myself or is there something special about them when the account is created on the server?

Thanks in advance guys (and girls!).

is the plan you bought able to run cgi?

is it not necessary to have a public_html folder - not all hosts configure this way

it may be a simple case of creating a cgi-bin (set the permissions) and upload at the root (ie where the index file is)

Yes cgi is enabled. Needed it to run the mail script on the contact page. It only a very simple "this is who we are, this is where we are" site for our shop. Very frustrating.

creating a cgi-bin (set the permissions)
Sorry to sound stupid.... What do I set the permissions to?

          Thanks Jo,

Tried that still no joy. Looks like I might have to persevere and wait for Tech Sup to get back to me.

Neil, page 147 of the AUG tells you what to set the permissions to.

Thanks for that, but I'm an EPOS user not Actinic. I did find it on the forum, but creating the bin didn't solve the problem anyway. I think it must be the way the hosting company have configured the webspace (or not!).

              Thanks again.

when you FTP to your "site" what folders or files do you see

Can you go up and down the folder tree as it were, as the holding page can be deleted and with 123reg they do not install a public_html folder as it is not required - you do this yourself if you need one

Also, if you bought a domain name and hosting all with 123reg then you should be a ble to upload within 24hrs from buying it

Don't waste your time and money on tech support, you'll be waiting for weeks

Hi Kev thanks for the reply -

There are no files or folders at all, only what I have created myself (index.html + images folder + cgi-bin - from pinbrooks earlier suggestion) in an effort to try and make the test page visible.

Originally when I ftp'd in all I could see was the empty top level folder "/" there is no tree to go down and I can go no higher. The 123reg support site suggests trying to locate specific file through browser eg /images/image.jpg but all I get it the holding page again (minus the CSS).

The domain is active as all I got was a 403 or 404 error and then the holding page appeared about 48 hours later (that was last friday), and obviously I can connect and upload files no problem.

Properties on "index.html" shows location as
"hosting9.123-reg.co.uk/" ie root folder I assume?

Ok - the package you have bought is the 123 reg hosting - this does not have a cgi-bin as standard, you need to create this using your ftp software. Once you have done this then look at the 123-reg network settings I have posted and import them into actinic. Change the password etc and upload. There is no public folder - that is in webfusion packages (you may have been better buying one of these as the bandwidth etc is better) you have a 30 day option to cancel and upgrade if you want.

Don't forget that Webfusion and 123-reg are "sister" companies, and that more often than not, when you have a Webfusion account, the domain name is still hosted with 123-reg, so upgrading to a Webfusion package would be straightforward.

If you do upgrade remember to get the Linux package - I have also posted the network setting for this package as well.

                          Thanks guys,

                          Not actually much help though.

All I want to do is upload a very simple non e-commerce site. I've tried every combination of index.html in root/public/www folders with or without cgi-bin all I get is the holding page and none of the files (images etc) are visible through a browser either.

.....Still waiting for 123 reg TS after 4 days!

have you reset the DNS from the standard 123-reg to your hosting?

Name servers are set to ns & ns2.123reg.co.uk as per their own instructions.
