Junk mail & MPS...what is the point?

Small rant but a rant none the less...

Having registered with the MPS (mail preferential service), I thought my days of filtering through half a ton of rain forest produce were over.

Alas, this is not the case. I still receive lots of c£$p (60% of my mail) from companies I have NEVER traded with or chosen to add my details to. So my question is this...

what is the point of the MPS and does it work? If so, how do I get it to work?!?!?!

I have rang three companies today and told them to STOP IT, but they do not give a hoot..."we do not compile the lists etc?" BUT THEY DO PAY THE COMPANY THAT DOES!

Time for a new forum me thinks...............

FWIW, I agree...but what annoys me more is the amount of mail I get that isn't even addressed..you know, the stuff the postie has to shove in EVERYONE'S letterboxes.
I know they're limited to so many a day or week or whatever but it bugs the hell out of me because I never even open the stuff!

actually...I think I'll join you in that room

I think it does work but takes some time to get into the database.

Once your address is on the 'do not send list' then most mailing lists are filtered against it cut out your address. Any companies that don't do this are at risk of prosecution and loss of licence.

In my experience I found it to work well.

Hi it is the responibility of the company sending the mail to run the files they rent against MPS. So the companies you rang today should care and should be checking the file. You need to give it about 3 months to get filtered through to the MPS file updates but after that it should work. If you are still getting unsolicited mail after this time you need to send any mail you get to the MPS. They will investiagte and believe me the time it takes to answer their queries etc will waste enough of any marketing depts time and get them to comply going forward. Obviously there are coyboys and overseas mailers that will flaunt the rules and you will still receive some unsolicited mail but sending it to the MPS will cause these companies a big headache.

Once you are on the register (takes about 3 months as I said) you will see a huge reduction in mail from the companies that do abide by the rules.

Def send the post to MPS then as they will investiagte and you have only 7 days to reply to them as to where you got the name, which MPS file you used etc etc.

I'd rather have junk mail than spaz's phoning us with mentalist telecom service claims.

All letters received this week now sent to the MPS.

For anyone requiring the postal address to report these junk monsters, I have posted it here.

Sorry probably didn't make myself clear. You send the unsolicited mail pack to MPS and say that you've not req, not a previous customer etc. They write to the company concerned, and they have 7-10 days to repond in writing to the MPS with why they mailed you. And they have to supply proof to the MPS for their reasons. In many cases the customer forgets they have ordered from you in the past etc but if they shouldn't have mailed you there are fines etc.
