Horse bolted, but still upgrading security anyway

    Greetings all,

Having just been burgled at work and losing about £3k of S n a p o n hand tools amongst other things, I'm planning to do some security upgrades.

The chief upgrade being a new high tech alarm with all the bells and sirens plus external sensors that trigger a call to the monitoring station. All well and good, but I don't want to have to go down there and roam a large site in the middle of the night so some psycho druggy can stab me for the dog buscuits I keep in my pocket.

Therefore I'm looking at IP/Network cameras to enable me to have a quick look and phone the thin blue line if necessary.

Perhaps some of you have some experience of these products already? I've looked on ebay and wasn't overly impressed with the Taiwanese junk on there, so I've turned to Maplin and am considering the following items:

DVR4-NET DVR - to plug the cameras into and record what goes on
SonyCCD 92LED Camera - so I can see what goes on in the dark
Swann Maxi Day/Night - so I can watch people pinch stuff from inside

4 decent cameras will adequately cover all points of entry and the reception. There's no point going OTT, because the bastards will just wear hoodies.

    Comments warmly received...

PS. If anyone in the NW gets offered like new rails of S n a p o n 3/8 or 1/4 drive sockets minus a few that they missed, please phone the fuzz.

Eat them on the drive to the warehouse to answer the alarm.. calm your nerves

There are several threads on this already and well worth reading. We use 4 web cams set to motion record to a hard drive on a spare PC. This can also be FTP'd to a site or you can even log in and watch the b*****ds in a web browser from home (whilst eating the dog biscuits). don't recall the software but was open source .. the total cost was a few hundred quid (including new hard drive) plus some legally required "you are being filmed" signs so the scroats are informed you are watching them steal your stuff.

we found the BGGEST outside camera housings we could from ebay (six of them), then went down to maplins and bought a set of simple ulterabright flashing led's. (again big ones)
drilled a hole in the bottom of each casing, installed the led's and made it clear that "we take security seriously"

there's nothing in the boxes, but nobody knows that, - result, no more hassle, the problem has moved on,
we did get lots of prolems from gippo's but no more.
having said that, we do have the swann camera systems from maplins as well, They work, they're simple but we find the network remote monitoring not quite up to the job. having said the, it beats the hell out of going to work in three in the morning.

for external IP cameras, you can beat the wireless offerings from AXIS.

can we have some suggestions on how to stop an intruder unplugging your network cable, thus knocking out your remote monitoring (quite a likely scenarion if they intend nicking your computer).

aren't those supposed to be public access gabe? they all look like city center cams

those cameras are old firmware cameras, and can be exploited using a common axis exploit.

not to mention that this type of google-hacking exposes all sorts of private cameras as well.

some axis cameras have speakers on them, so you can use your computer mic to shout at intruders and mock them as they stumble around wondering where the voice of god is coming from.

some of them have pan/tilt/zoom controls, and using them, you can find all sorts of private things that the owners diddnt intend you to see.

this is also something that you can do to some cameras found in google.

              as for network cables:

lock your wireless router in a box with wpa/psk encryption and lock your wireless camera in a metal enclosure.

              solved. no wires at all.

Thank you for the excellent advice, especially about eating the dog buscuits - not sure how my dog would react...

Once you start looking for this type of product there are sooooo many options out there, the Axis stuff all looks great as does the Swann range.

I'd bought some proper camera housings and had them up outside - now just needing to get the cameras to put in them :-)
