    names for my intranet?

I need to sort out my intranet and need to come up with new names (groups of names) for all the different machines.
there is the main office (complete with server), there sub-offices, a warehouse and a few private houses (managers etc)

someone suggested the network domain is called "Trees" with "Oak" as the server, "plane", "poplar", "chestnut" etc being machine names, sub domains of "hundred-acres" for one of the offices - you get the idea

I have to avoid (etiquette) any rude names (there's nowt more annoying than asking the secretary "what is she working on" and get a rude reply

It has been suggested that I also avoid names like "satan" for the main server - it sort of gives the wrong impression of the server before you even log on.

so come on, all you sparks, what about some names.

I'll keep popping back to the thread, over the next few days

I worked on a site that had a relatively open-house policy on machine names. Two machines got named Sex and Drugs and another two, Heat and Dust.
So... phrases that were actually heard in the office:

"But I need Drugs to get the release done"
      "Cathy T___ is on Heat"

I chose "Cartoon Cats" as system names for a smallish LAN once. "Tom", "Garfield", etc.

That site has got a lot bigger and it's now quite a challenge to find new names, but they keep trying in the original spirit.

One Christmas I snuck in and changed all the logos on the system units to nicely laminated images of said cats.

            Dull and boring:
            [companyname]computer1,[companyname]computer2,[companyname]computer3 etc
            [companyname]server1,[companyname]server2.....
            [companyname]remote1,[companyname]remote2.....

            Different:
            Name them from the thesaurus
e.g. different words for dynamic http://thesaurus.reference.com/browse/dynamic
management will love the psychobabble connotations.

            Abstract:
Play "seven steps to Kevin Bacon" naming them after the stars you find on the way - you can take that one as far as you like.
            - "I need to get network access to Humphrey Bogart"
            - "Well I'm waiting for Elvis to reboot!"
            - "How long will it take to defrag Marylin Munroe's hard drive?"

thanks for the suggestions, - keep em coming, the night's still young.

here at the office, they've suggested disney characters,

then when I said to a 17yr old, "you could be Arial" - she replied "nooo... if anything, I want to be that little fish"

"flounder" is his name, just about summed it up really.

If it were me I'd go for Harry Potter characters - Dumbledore, Lord Voldermort (or he who should not be named), hermonine, Harry etc or some of the strange creatures in the books, fluffy the 3 headed dog etc.

                        I don't think that's spare time.
I think that's bordering on treatment for rare forms of OCD!

Lord of the Rings characters are always popular with the geeks: Start with the friendly-sounding ones (Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin etc.) and go from there. When you think you've run out, you can always dip into the books for more.

                          Other themes I've seen used:
                          - Characters from the Hitchhiker's Guide
                          - Characters from Discworld
(you're beginning to get a picture of the people I have to work with)
                          - the planets and moons (lots of fun with: "I need to get into Uranus")
                          - characters from Greek mythology
                          - characters from Shakespeare

Megatron is mentioned on the song 'Hellrider' by Judas Priest, Hellrider also refers to the rest of the decepticons as "these Gods of steel".
OMG, I was listening to this earlier today.
