I believe there was an aborted one some time back, looks like they have got it sorted now.

They're beginning to face some competition in the SE market, maybe they needed a bit of PR, just to get their name out there in case we've forgotten about them.

I still use IRC (and variations of) quite a bit..I have to edit out /me quit often when I'm posting! (and in msn!)

switch to pidgin, it supports the irc style tags, last time i checked.

ooh..I bookmarked that last time you mentioned it actually
didn't get any further than that though. Must look at it again (mind you, I might forfeit all my msn "emoticons" and animations if I do...that would certainly tame a few conversations
