What happened to toffee apples, gingerbread men and penny for the Guy and of course the bonfire?

Probably all been banned by the EEC.

Just come back from Lewes, in East Sussex, where they almost set the streets alight with the 3 hour procession of local bonfire societies.
Think next year it has to be smokeless bonfires and fireworks.

Well the 3 trees at the bottom of our garden used to get regularly charred by the bonfire, however all 3 fell over earlier this year in the winds. We also ran out of firewood last year and the shed replaced what the firewood pile was missing. For the first time i was truly concerned, that was more than a gutter melterer. This year, no fireworks, no bonfire and no party for the first time ever. I blame the nipper. Next year i will be cooking my cauldron of curry again no doubt and the nipper, well hopefully he likes bangs a bit more by then - there will be little choice i expect.

I know that feeling, mine loves them now, and of course with that conservatory he thought it wa even better because he could watch from inside.

As for curry, i did a huge pot of chilli, always do, the wife always backs it up with a curry though, had to fee about 20 people, and this year for starters we did a big pot of hotdogs and of course jallapeno relish hmmmmmmmmmmmm, need something to get you through. Mind no bonfire this year though, it would have ended up burning the new wood for my office, that reminds me i need to make a start on that.

This year we just did a few fireworks for ourselves. I skimped on the fireworks a bit which meant they were rather puny to say the least. It didn't help when one of our neighbours started off his expensive set, one of them kept going for 2-3 minutes, which led to my son telling me he preferred the 'posh' fireworks.

The Lewes bonfire procession is spectacular, although it's probably 25 years since I was there. I thought this Fire Barrel festival http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/devon/7080502.stm sounds interesting. Definitely something a bit strange going on down there in the South West.

I dont think we needed bonfire night to work that out, did we?

Last year we had a huge street party for bonfire night. It was bustling and great fun!
This year...nothing...or maybe they just didn't tell us!

Mike, you'll have people saying that the Scots are tight next.

Which is probably nothing compared to what the Scots say about the Aberdonians.

I blame the shop I was buying them in. All I wanted was a simple box of halfway decent fireworks to keep us entertained for 20-30 minutes. There was no way I was going for the £10 box, the £40 box was BOGOF (which would have been too many fireworks for what I wanted) so I ended up with the £20 box.

Last year we had some friends round, so we had the £40 BOGOF boxes and of course everyone else brought the same. It ended up taking us 3 hours to set them all off, by which time the kids were bored and causing havoc and the adults were too drunk to care.

                            and the problem is?

I'd have gone for the BOGOF ones and saved a box for next year
In fact, the ones we did (all 5 of them LOL) were leftovers from 2 years ago!

The kids were quite happy to watch everyone elses (much more impressive) displays from upstairs windows
