it means you can isntall xp and run it as a normal laptop.

what the spec sheet fails to tell you is that the cpu is only 900mhz.

not very good for larger shops.

Ah right, so it could be an XP machine instead of Linux.

To be honest if i got one i wouldn't be looking to use it for actinic, i've got other machines for that. The appeal of this is to have a portable pc - when i'm portable i'm not doing actinic work

The Asus Eee PC 701. Unfortunately mine departed Sunday as a present in the hands of my daughter. I've tried to get another but every-one's out of stock (and eBuyer, from where mine came, for some weird reason, discontinued it after only 1 week).

After 1 weeks use I found it a great web-browsing and Email reading tool.

OpenOffice managed to read / write my macro laden Excel spreadsheets OK, so full marks there.

Asus provide a simple tabbed GUI but it's easy to enable a full KDE desktop. I found that I preferred the simple desktop and switched back to it.

I updated Skype to the Linux beta 2 and was able to run full video conferencing on it (there's a web-cam in the lid).

There's a shell window there as soon as you hit Control Alt T for the geeks and Gabes among us.

Personally I wouldn't try to shoehorn XP and Actinic onto its tiny 4Gb solid-state drive. It would fit OK but you only get an 800 x 480 screen and that may be too small to run Actinic effectively.

Screen calipers gets my vote also.

Visual Studio Express should get a mention - does most of what it's big brother does and for free - though probably not classed as open source as the code is not freely available AFAIK

Hehe. The picture on The Register is of the relatively unscathed top side of the motherboard. You should see what the bottom looks like!
