This style is beginning to crop up more and more lately and i think it has a future for sure. Problem i think at the moment is that it is a little too different and people do not adapt to change too well, certainly not something that different.
I think it's great and in a few years will become quite normal. There are certain marketplaces that this will really help, online newspapers, clothes shops, argos type stores where browsing is the norm etc.
To be really effective though we need larger screen sizes, this will hold it back for a while IMO.

Sounds like an Israeli fisherman who has fell out of his boat.
Always good if you can avoid a download though, I've always wondered why so much stuff is on pdf when it could be on a format that is already on customers pc's.
Maybe more common now, but how many less frequent interweb users kill a screen/possible purchase via the little X when asked to download something.
We keep an eye on The White Company website from the days when we were doing something similar, and they had a brochure like this about 12 months ago but then scrapped it. I think the problem was, as Lee says, it was just too small. I'm looking at George's example on a 1900x1200 and it looks great, but gets difficult to use at smaller sizes.
There are quite a few new and trendy catalogues with this feature nowadays. Personally, I often find these pages unclear online and would much prefer a hard-copy catalogue, especially for items such as clothes. These are then also nice to browse when you are NOT online!
Many people prefer the interaction of a more traditional website when they are online.
The most valuable feature about the example given at http://www.grindstore.com is that when you want to look at an item in more detail (essential), you can click on the page - and it takes you to their normal website!
Looks good though!
