wireless boosters

anyone got any idea how i can boost the wireless signal on my lappie?

i am trying to login to a `friends wireless network, its across the street.

I have 2 machines here, one of them can get a strong signal and login the other pc simply doesn't see it (although it can detect other wireless networks in the vicinity.

Failing being able to increase the strength of the receiving laptop, could i increase the strength of the wireless router?
