    Windows Update Problem

    Any help on this would be most appreciated, as after over two hours on the microsoft website looking for a solution, i'm slowly going out of my mind

    PC
    XP Pro SP2
    Set to Automatically Install Updates

    The following update keeps dowloading but is unable to install (no error message);
    Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 2 (KB921896)

    I've installed various suggestions via the microsoft website but still no joy and i'm left with the various microsoft programs on my PC.

    If anyone can see from the attached image if any of the 'red-circled' items can be deleted i'd be obliged?

    The PC is only used to run Actinic EPOS and is ocassionally used to access the internet via a wireless dongle to our wireless hub. Basically nothing fancy.

    TIA

    Does EPOS use MS SQL Server 2005?

      I don't use any functionality linking EPOS to any other PC but the following on the Actinic Website says;

      Actinic EPOS Solo provides a simple, low-cost, complete solution for a single-till shop, yet provides a full upgrade path to multi-till, multi-site and head office solutions if they are required later down the line.

      All Actinic EPOS applications come with comprehensive merchant functionality and work with touch-screens, ordinary PCs or specialist EPOS kit. Easy to use sales and tendering allows sales to be made with a minimum of fuss. All have a user-friendly Windows interface and are based on Microsoft Access database - fully expandable to Microsoft SQL Server.

        If you are 100% sure you are not using SQL Server Express you could stop it as a service running on the PC, and uninstall it from the CP, this should then stop the Windows Update trying to install the update. You can also chose in Windows update to not attempt to install the update again.

        However, something must have install SQL/x on your machine if you did not, so I would make extra sure that nothing is dependant on it. I have no idea if Actinic EPOS requires it I'm afraid.

          Thanks for the pointers.

          I hadn't relised about the Actinic EPOS using the Microsoft SQL Server and I also hadn't realised that there was Windows Updates & Microsoft Updates as two separate things, so i've just disabled the Microsoft Updates and left the Windows Updates to automatically update as usual.

          Enlightened.

            There are known issues with the latest service packs on the .net framework updates due to earlier installations. Getting them rectified can be an enourmous pain in the ar$e... I have a machine at work which point blank refuses to accept the latest .net and SQL upgrades in the new 2008 release

              If you've recently installed Microsoft Office Accounting (now a free download for the lite version), you may well have got a lot of other stuff like the Microsoft SQL Server installed.

                I'm playing with that at the moment Norman. How are you getting along with it?
