Windows XP SP2 `server service not starting` problem

    People.

Got a severe brainsqueeze happening due to a pc not wanting to network or share files.

I've done quite a lot in the last couple of days to try to cure this but still no cure as yet.

    Heres the issue described elsewhere.

    Another possible solution.

I've done these things along with the disk check and the sfc \scannow prompt.

Basically, the server service ain't activating, (set on automatic on admin options, services). The files seem to be good, I mean I think I've checked them in different ways a few times now and the suggested missing ones in the attached threads are all there.

Only firewall is Windows (and the moment), and its not activated. Only one log-in at the moment (for testings sake), and thats admin, with no password. I don't know how long this pc has been like this so cannot tie it in with any software additions or similar.

Theres a few more things that I've tried, including restoring and suchlike but nothing has worked so far. I did re-boot after most checks and tweaks. All av and spyware stuff is up to date and run almost daily with no problems for quite a while.

Although, obviously, a file may be corrupt, but I just get the feeling that something, somewhere, ain't activated.

Its a Dell pc, with the original op on a hidden partition (apparently), and theres no proper repair facility, more a clean wipe with fresh instalation, and to be honest, I'm not convinced it will be cured.

So.... any ideas before Blonde Bird gets it?

Personally I would just go striaght to the pub and forget about it for the weekend and hope it magically worked again on Monday morning! However, the slightly more helpful side of me might suggest this:-

(that is, if you haven't already tried it!)

In Services does it give an error when you try to manually start it?
You can also check the dependant services are running (In Services - right click - Properties - Dependancies tab).

            Heres the error.

            No dependancies showing.

The server service looks for this file, which is where it should be.

              Hi George

The svchost.exe file is the generic service host executor for DLLs - it will be used by many services, so, unless all of your services are failing, then it is unlikely to be a prblem with svchost.exe itself.

You can see exactly what services are using the host by following the steps here.

I would say its probably an issue with the registry settings for the network sharing service... might be worth digging around the web to check that is all correct.

Failing that, to the pub like Dave says!

I did find this earlier and tried it with no success... BUT... it does say to leave these files...

                EnableSharedNetDrives*
                Lmannounce
                NullSessionPipes
                NullSessionShares
                Size

...and I don't have the one marked with an *. (Neither does a nearby pc which does work).

                The investigation continues.
