VAT on membership?

Probably a really simple question, but would a membership charge be VATable?

Yes I think it would. By buying a membership you are receiving benefits or rights to a service at preferential rates.

Bet a dirty nappy's liable for vat though - it's been 'value added'!!
Cr*p is taxable it seems.
