Company not releasing domain

Hi there,

We are looking at developing a local companies site that was first designed about 2 years ago by company "X". Now we have come to redesign the site and make some improvements we have had to contact company X to release the domain so we can host it and offer the hosting in our package. Trouble is that when we call company X they say they have lost all the information regarding the site and are not willing to release the domain. When I have checked the whois, the domain is registered in the name of company X!!

Is there anything we can do to get the domain back or should we just get anopther domain??

I believe you can go directly to nominet, if you can prove it is your domain or your clients but purchased by another company they will change it.

If its a good domain name and has a lot of internet presence then its worth it.

Get the company whos domain name it should be registered under to contact nominet (if its a .co.uk) or whoever the domain was registered with (if its a .com .net, this will be someone like tucows or Network Solutions) they will tell them how to get it back and transferred into their name and their control.

I have done just this on one of my websites,
Nominet are extremely helpful, and you end up having to provide a covering letter on headed paper, signed by a director etc, and then they act quite quickly, I seem to remember the whole process took a couple of weeks

I have 2 clients in similar situations right now.
One who 'lost' control of theirs with a previous web designer who appears to have vanished and one who has zero computer literacy and whose domain seems to have no registrar etc.

Both will reclaim them, I'm sure. They do appear to need a rocket up their proverbial to get onto it though!
The latter, in particular, has just had business stationery printed with the domain name in question on it!

It's certainly very possible to reclaim via Nominet though.
