Warehousing query

sorry about this but i am totally new to the concept

there is a good chance that we will move to a warehouse within the next few months (our 1st)

we are thinking of how to store all the products in an efficient manner.

at the moment the products either stay on their carton boxes (fairly big), or small carton boxes, Height of a DVD sideways or we use plastic storage boxes from ikea

at the moment we stack the plastic boxes in columns of 7 which is not that usefull as it is causing me a lot of pain when i have to retrieve items from the last box.

we are thinking of adopting a 2 boxes high method on the warehouse so we can remove items fairly fast.

now my question is how can we make full use of a warehouse unit that can accomodate several box in height and what do we use to set up the warehouse?

I can sympathise with that. mine are usually 7 high too except, at the minute, I have 3 'piles' deep...so sometimes I have to move nearly 20 boxes to get to the one I want

Shelving is your friend. Racks to a width of your choosing and heights of the shelves to suit. I have a past life that was looking after a large store and theres nothing better.

Even used stuff would be okay as long as its clean (ie not rusty).

If you go into Game or HMV they usually have all their Games/CDs/DVDs stored in Draws behind the counter.

Is that somethig that you could employ? Label the draws A,B,C etc and put the games spine up in Alphabetical order?

There are lots of companies selling second hand racking ... dexion for the smaller stuff and pallet racking or the bulkier stuff. We bought moveable warehouse steps and these released the upper reaches and then use a cage for hoisting fools to the top levels of the pallet towers.

Getting your storage right from the off will save you many man hours down line when you expend and get busier.

Are these free standing Jonty or did you bolt them to the concrete walls of your bunker?

And paint the floors and walls if they are bare concrete to keep dust down.

Health Safety stated we had to bolt the blighters down .... to be fair there is over 6 ton on each bay.

Can you provide the longitude and latitude of the rack containing the most expensive stuff please. I feel the need to hear some broken glass.

as it will be only a warehouse and quite high a far as i remember standard store selving is out of the question (i already considered that).

Jonty, one qustion regarding the pallet racking. i have seen beams on a online website which i pressume thay are combined with some kind of "Vertical" beams to make the racking. What can you put on the beams as a "Floor"???

also do you have an example for cage and warehouse steps (sorry for my ignorance)

The building I rent an office in has a new building being built currently so I've reserved a larger office/room. We intend to rack the new one out so, fingers crossed, my days of moving 20 boxes, to get to one, will be over in the new year!

For the intermediate shelves where no need for a full height pallet we simply used 8x4 block board from local timber merchants
