0808 Free fax numbers

We're just about to experiment with fax by email using an American company which can provide a UK "toll free" number for us starting with 0808. Any thoughts on:

• Whether 0808 numbers are suffering the same fall in trust levels as other 08 numbers seem to be experiencing?
  
• Is it widely recognised that 0808 is the fax equivalent of 0800?
  
• Would a free to fax to 0808 number encourage junk faxes, and if so would registering with the Fax Preference Service deal with this effectively?
  
• In short, would we be better off with a local geographic number?
  
• How do these people make money out of this - they don't charge any extra for an 0808 number which is free to fax to?

Would you fax someone if you suspect it could cost you £1 a minute (or whatever) to do so?

The ONLY numbers I think people recognise are the usual area codes, 0800 and possibly, the local call one, 0845.

The rest I think are pretty unknown costwise. (In my lowly opinion).
