    submissions to search engines

My father Vic Furze, (75yrs old) has been busy for some time now, creating a web site at www.andover-fire-log.co.uk that records a large diary (log book) for the Andover Fire Brigade from 1908 to 1916. down in Hampshire.

The Log Book, is a real diary that was started exactly 100 years ago by the local fire brigade, showing all the fires they went to, how much it cost to pay firemen, the cost of refreshments, hire of the horses etc. They even name the "little girl" that played with the matches and set fire to the place - its a fascinating place of life 100 years ago.

Its his first web site (well he is 75+ and this new fangled web thing is fascinating to him), and on many days, struggles to understand the difference beween MS outlook and IE Explorer, but he's persevered and created a great website faithfully reproducing (scanning) over 150 pages of the log book. Each page is a scanned copy of the diary, together with notes about each event.

He's currently writing to the BBC etc, local radios, newspapers, fire brigades etc, even fire brigades around the world, to let them know there's a new site, and hints suggest there may be a "local interest feature" on the beeb on the 100th aniversary of the diary, eventually, the links from other places will show up, but in the mean time, when people type "andover fire log" into search engines, nothing shows up (of course not yet and I understand why.)

I've advised him to start with forums for firemen etc, get a few incoming links,

Now the difficult bit, how do we get the sites showing up in the major search engines BEFORE the beeb and others get hold of the story, it would be great to let people search for the site name

As he's doing this for "the fun of it", He's clearly unable to employ "search engine" companies etc, to handle it, and lots of the SEO submission companies want "a few pounds for their efforts" but can anyone suggest reputable urls that might be able to help in his endevours please and no cost to him.

If you want to take a peep, click on the link, I think he would be chuffed to bits to see people actualy looking at the pages.

What a lovely site. He should be very proud. I will add a link to it from one of my other (non-commercial) sites and have added it to Google's list to crawl at some point in the future.

Many thanks for the comment, and the offer to link to him, it will be most apreciated. I've just told him that I've posted here, and he couldn't quite get his head around the "why" question, but with a bit more talking, he's come up with a new idea "can I do a guestbook" - ambitions are growing !

I would like to help him here, and probably tailor the guestbook to fit into the style of the pages for him

the guestbook will need Captcha, delayed publishing so he can edit the spam which no doubt is coming his way, but really isn't needing skype, msn, icq links etc, its just not that sort of site.

there's such a range of guestbooks out there, can anyone reccommend a simple (secure) open source php based one that I could tailor into his site please, nothing complex, but at the same time, something that he can manage.

        thanks again guccij

I'm not on a of to check if the site is indexed but as it's been up for some time it should be showing by now. Check where he has it hosted as many of the free web hosting you get with an ISP etc are blocked by google because they are full of personal sites which dilute the searches. If it is hosted on one of these then spend a few pounds and get some decent hosting

            He's with easySpace,
its always a tradeoff between facilities, costs, and promises.
He's not adversed to moving the website, especially as its still not indexed, but in the end, he wants this one to succeed.

I would not advise submitting the site to search engines especially google as sites will always rank higher I'd they are found naturally. The use of auto submitters is considered spam these days and generally have a megatons effect.

Put his site URL in your forum signature and that will be enough to allow googlebot to find the site. If it's not indexed in the next few days have a closer look at your hosting although easyspace should be ok.

Look in his site code and see if there is anything stupid in there which would prevent g seeing the site. There are lots of spider simulators out there you can use to check. Link to ibp on my website which has a simulator you can use

looking at the source code the menu system being used is creating a huge ammount of code at the begining of each page. Googlebot will only go so deep on a page before giving up and deciding the page is not worth indexing and that may be happening here. Also the navigation may not be spider friendly - try some deep links from the text on the home page and get a plain html sitemap on there. Im not a fan of them but a google sitemap may help if you cannot produce a clean sitemap.

Also in your post you have linked using the www and non www urls - its best to stick to one

I took a quick look and couldn't see any meta keywords or description tags. They're not strictly necessary but will help and the description tag content will usually appear in the serps for the page.

Submit the website to a few 'reputable' directories like Yahoo and DMOZ. It's non commercial so you shouldn't have to pay anything.

You want to bring it to the attention of the Family History websites. They love this kind of thing. Start with the local FH Society. Submit it to the various genealogy magazines - they are always looking for interesting historical websites that they can write a short article about. If you could add a simple index by people's names, it would be even better.

thanks for all the feedbacks, I'll relay them to my father tonight, I mentioned the thread to him last night, and he printed off the thread saying " I'll read that when we've finished the phone call"

the idea about the genealogy mags and sites is a nice one, I'll add that to his list of things he has to do.

The metatags is another of those jobs. I've explained these before, but the concept was a bit over his head, I'll have another go.

Personally, I'll have to look at the menu's for him, I'll create a bit of PHP to detect on the page name, they all start with the yyyymmdd format, so it will be easy to detect on the page, extract the year and then only include the relevent year and hide the rest, thanks Malcom.

I'll also look at the htaccess and make sure that the www and non-www point to the same place with a permanant re-direct. - I've also edited the first post to point to a single domain.

                      Many thanks
