I originally wanted the Olympus E410 but once I'd handled it and handled the E510 there was no debate - the E510 has a protrusion on the front of the body on the right hand side which allowed for a better grip - the E410 is flat and I felt that made it difficult to hold - it didn't feel natural.

I'm a sold out Canon man myself, though the new Nikon's look nice.
If you want to wade through a seriously heavy forum (check out how many people seem to always be online), then goto http://photography-on-the.net/forum/
It will, I guarentee, answer any question you have about Canon (and a lot of other makes) cameras.
If the DSLR is too big, and the compacts don't cut it, look at a Canon Powershot - it's kind of "hybrid" - the SX10 has Image Stablisation and the latest Digic processor - Amazon has this down for £356. This is a very good static camera.
It's got a 28mm lense which is great for wide angle shots and the zoom will allow you decent use for portraits etc.
Of course, my favourite lens for my is a 500mm Canon L lens. Sadly, at around £6000 for lens alone it will be on my wish list for some time to come.

Lee,
I have just bought the Canon 450D for when we want decent photos and my wife's handbag contains the Sony compact for those spur of the moment photos.
450D was £375 from Dixons at Manchester Airport (after £50 cashback). Normally hate shopping at Dixons but it was a great price. Sony compact was ~£100.
I have to comment that the 450D is totally in another league in terms of the quality of photos that you can take.www.quantumAV.co.uk
