andover fire log diary - an old man is very very very happy

a few weeks ago, I posted, here on the forum, a bit about the Andover Fire Log website that had been written by my father, Vic Furze

In it, he wrote about an old diary he found in the loft of the fire station some 35yrs ago, that originated from 1908 to 1916 and told of every fire the local fire brigade attended during that period, together with names, fees etc.

Well. He's now over the moon, today at 9am, the local BBC film crew turned up at his home, and did a little piece on his website. - admittedly, it lasted only a few minutes on the tele, but it was his 15 minutes of fame.

They filmed him looking at the diary, visiting the current Andover fire station and talking to the crew, and finally filmed him working in his "cupboard".
The clip on the tv went out on the "South" version of the local BBC news tonight even gave his website address out on the screen

The BBC has put a video of him on their website.

Hits on the website, well its a bit too early to tell, but to give you an idea, the stats logfile for the 11th was for 27k and tonight (it only went out at 7pm) is currently standing at 2665k (1,000% increase in the last two hours !)

(bear in mind this a minority interest site, not a large actinic shop)

Thought I would update folks, and also thank those that offered advice about his site.

as a PS, I've done the changes to the menu as suggested, and those will go on in the next few days, He's been busy trying to get things together for the filming, so he's not yet had a chance to update the menus.

    regards

Great news. It's lovely when the outside world recognises the value of these kinds of sites. What will your father do now? He needs another project!

Brillliant news. And what a great job he has done. I found this entry:

[Jan 2nd 1902] Refreshments valued at 18/- were supplied to the fire fighters and no doubt helpers
For 18 shillings they must have had one heck of a slap-up tea. That was a fortune!

The value of 18 shillings in 1908 versus 2007:

£67.38 using the retail price index.
            £354.69 using average earnings.

Not quite a fortune but definitely a bit more than a sandwich and a cup of tea methinks.

ah but take a look at one of the biggest fires for years at Reeks -23rd April 1910 - lasted a couple of days !

Here, they really pushed the boat out,
Poor old Fireman Jerome worked for 27 1/2 hrs straight and got paid £1-8s-6d
and refreshments for everyone was £1-9s-5d
the old Co-op insurance eventually paid out a massive £10-0s-5d

sort of puts the latest credit bail outs into perspective
