Elections in 2009?

Just a quick request to garner opinion from forumites about when the dour scot will bolt for a general election and which colour will prevail at Number 10 once its all over.

For me I think he will run in the Autumn of 2009 because he reckons things will be getting better by then and he would be able to ride the crest of the wave.

However I think despite the aloof Cameron being at the helm the flag flying at Downing street will be a blue one. Nulabour seem to have failed just about every group of voters they said they would help, if my peer group is to be believed.

Labours time has to be numbered, especially with the current recession, job losses etc... someone has to take the blame and they are the ones in power... the responsibility of being held responsible holds heavy consequences.

Anyway, I'm not getting involved in this as it's too near Christmas and I don't want to get any more depressed.

Well as a 'dour scot' I can only say I pray to god that Cameron doesn't get in. Not because I am a Tory hating Scot (although I largely am) but because it will give Alec Salmond the mandate he needs to try and force through independence. Something, probably contrary to most people's belief, that most Scots don't want.

Cameron, Brown, Salmond, some anonymous Liberal and the truly awful Mr Mandelson. None of them have a clue about what makes the world go round.

Ah Yes. The old "everyone else is a fool and I know better" view. Can't say I agree with you. Whether your approach is Interventionist or Laissez-faire there's a whole world of people and companies out there that will try to abuse the system (sorry, do the best for themselves in the given circumstances) and eventually force a retrenchment.

Don't get me wrong. I am not saying I am any better than any of them. Being a politician at any level in 21st century Britain holds no appeal whatsoever for me.
To be perfectly honest the underlying problem lies in the often inept and entrenched civil service that stays in power no matter what colour rosettes the political mouthpieces wear.
With that said the people at the top of each party are there simply because of their 'electability'. This is a real flaw in what passes for UK democracy IMHO.
There are people in politics who do know what they are doing and do it well but unfortunately they seem to remain anonymous.

sorry the british political system has become nothing more than point scoring and to be honest it bores me.

What would be a better discussion is peoples opinions on ditching the pound for the euro, perfect time if you ask me. This sort of discusion i find interesting, especially seeing other peoples views and reasons

In my humble opinion I see the Euro as the federalists way of getting a Federal Europe into place almost by stealth. If every European country has the same currency it is only a matter of time before economic conditions 'create' the 'right' environment to introduce a common taxation and once a common tax is in place a Federal State is a done deal.

I cannot see any point in being part of any sort of club where the membership costs far exceed the benefits that come from that membership.

In a few months the pound will be left alone by the currency speculators and it will be some other currency under the cosh. This isn't crystal ball gazing just looking back at history.

Why not put the Great back in Britain by sorting out Britains problems PDQ?

Erm... Alex Salmond at least had work experience in the real world. He was a leading economist at the Royal Bank of Scotland (and mercifully left long before their decline into penny shares).
