I remember one time I had a new PC and tried downloading the drivers for the BT jellyfish dsl modem on dial-up before downloading AVG, zonealarm, etc. It turns out the first five things I downloaded were various worms, trojans and viruses and took me the rest of the day to get rid of them.

and that is why the first thing I install is my AV software!
I don't even download Firefox until I've done my AV.
Most of the rest of the 'essentials' are from backups/discs anyway.

having said that, hubby bought a new laptop recently from Tesco (nice little Acer thing)

First thing we installed was an AV.
Ran a scan and it found a Trojan
Turns out this trojan was a 'freebie' with one of the junkware programs installed on the laptop and I found several references to it online as being bundles in these systems.

            Thanks Tesco, eh?

i tend to download essentials from the web rather than disks - just to make sure i get the latest versions. The only thing to come from backups is keys.

I would agree but it depends why I'm installing in the first place.
I tend to download (on old/previous machine) BEFORE transferring so I have all the installs on a disk before I start.
I find it's quicker to get up and running on the new machine that way.

Apart from AntiVirus & Firefox, I add

                        AdAware from Lavasoft
                        SpyBot
                        Belarc Advisor

For those who don't know Belarc, it outputs the PC's hardware & software config in HTML format including driver versions, Software keys etc. I tend to save this data on a separate data drive & use it if I everthe PC needs a rebuild.

                          skype
                          cix
                          napster

... I can now chat and listen to music, I don't need anything else (and most other things I use come of a disk anyway)

I thought I'd try Taskbar Shuffle - it works great. Another good thing it does is allow you to minimise Actinic when it hogs the desktop! Thanks for that Jonty.

EDIT: No it doesn't - spoke too soon.
