    Downtime on broadband

Found this message on another forum, so cannot confirm but it does make you think about your own situation if this happens to you

Anyone connected to O2 or Be on these exchanges will have seen their ADSL go off at about 1430 Sat:

WOOLWICH, CRAYFORD, DARTFORD, FARNINGHAM, KIDBROOKE, SWANLEY, LONGFIELD

Apparently a contractor cut through a cable, and the latest from O2 is that it might be fixed by end of play tomorrow (Mon) or perhaps Tue morning.

I post this only as it might be useful information for someone, but also as a timely reminder to anyone that relies on the internet for their business to have a full contingency plan in place.

I post this using a 3G dongle, and now face the task of getting all other services up and running via that connection. Just got the 3G dongle on Friday, could not have timed it better!

BT Business Broadband and all telephones were down for nearly a week in one of our business premises recently, reason initially given was that contactor cut a cable, however this quickly changed to criminals stole 400m of overhead line. We limped along with mobile phones, and two 3G dongles, one provided as a perk with one of the BT Broadband packages, the other a monthly contract Vodafone. I think this is likely to happen more often in the short term.

PS there is a rumour that the next iPhone (possibly this summer) will allow PCs to access internet by plugging in. This of course has been possible with other phones for some time, but it will be interesting to see whether the O2 iPhone unlimited data offer continues with this facility.
